Some people think it was quite rude of the Phantom to not give Madame Giry the same attention he gave Christine. In the 2004 ALW movie and the 25th anniversary production at the Royal Albert Hall, it is Madame Giry who first shows the Phantom compassion. She is the one who rescues the Phantom from a life as a human oddity in a traveling fair. Well, let me clear up why the Phantom cared for Christine rather than Madame Giry. It's not just the fact that Christine showed him compassion. Madame Giry was a ballet dancer. But the other reason the Phantom grew to love Christine is like him, she loved music. She understood music in a way that a ballet dancer probably wouldn't. Her father was a violinist. And we learn from the musical's liberetto that the Phantom was attracted to Christine when he heard her sing for the first time. Though Madame Giry sings in the musical, we know she was a ballet dancer and then the ballet mistress. Christine and the Phantom were able to bond over their love and knowledge of music in a way that Madame Giry wouldn't have been able to. Madame Giry couldn't bring life to the Phantom's music in the way Christine could.
